Stihl Chainsaw Production Years: Years Made For All Stihl Chainsaws

| | , ,

What were the production years for such and such Stihl chainsaw…?

Whether for interest’s sake or something more technical, the years made for Stihl chainsaw models is a very common question.

Just this week I’ve seen people ask:

  • What are the Stihl 025 years made?
  • Does anyone know the Stihl 028 AV Super years made?
  • What were the Stihl 011 AVT production years?

So we decided to put together the definitive list of Stihl Chainsaws years made from 1950 to the present day.

Stihl Gas Chainsaws Years Made

stihl chainsaw production years
The Stihl Contra was in production from 1959 – 1968

Here are the series, model, and production years of all the Stihl gas chainsaws from 1950 to today.

The first Stihl chainsaw was patented by Andreas Stihl in 1926 – it was also the first electric chainsaw.

The second Stihl chainsaw was one of the first gas chainsaws. This was the Stihl Type A which was produced from 1929 – 1932.

Early Stihl Chainsaws

  • Stihl A | 1929 – 1932 (two-man, 235 cc, 46 kg)
  • Stihl BD | 1934 – 1939 (two-man, 300 cc, 53 kg)
  • Stihl BBU | 1936 – 1954 (two-man bow saw, 158 cc, 30 kg)
  • Stihl B 2 Z | 1937 – 1938 (two-man, 450 cc, 59.8 kg)
  • Stihl KS 43 | 1943 – 1971 (two-man, 247 cc, 37.5 kg)

This isn’t ALL the oldest Stihl saws, but you can find more info on these early Stihl chainsaws here.

We’ll pick things up from the 1950s, as that’s when we meet the modern era of chainsaws. Stihl saws were originally made in Germany, but Stihl chainsaws are now produced around the world.

The Stihl GTA 26, released in 2021, is Stihl’s mini chainsaw that is great for pruning tree branches and shrubs.

And, in 2022, the Stihl MS 162 was released (not sure which series this falls under yet). It’s another small entry-level saw similar to the 170.

  1. Had a Stihl dealership in Lincolnton, NC tell me that Stihl never made an 021 chainsaw. This was two gentleman in their service department. I told them they didn’t know about there own products and should study the history of Stihl chainsaws. I own one and know better.

  2. I’m looking for fuel tank and carburetor parts for a 1969 saw. Where can vintage saw parts be found? It was dropped, and before that, it was the best chainsaw I ever used. It’s big, heavy, and sounds like a big dirt bike. I don’t have the make at this time, just looking where and how to get parts for the old beast.

    • Tom, eBay is going to be your best bet for saw parts. Also, if you’re on Facebook, you might have some luck on their “marketplace” or better yet, joining a group page dedicated to buying and selling Stihl parts.

      Best of luck,
      Reggie

  3. Did Stihl ever make a MS391 pro? with a decompression button? Or just the farm and ranch MS391? Ive never heard of a MS391pro but a guy has one for sale and is telling me its a pro because of the decompression button. Is this true or is he full of s***?

      • Thanks Dan. I just read your email. I acquired my 011 AVT a few years ago after a friend of mine’s mother passed away and my wife was helping her clean out her house. She and her husband had no use for a chain saw so during the clean out she asked me if I wanted it (among other things). I already had a chain saw but it was running very poorly, if at all. The 011 AVT was not running at all after many years (decades) of non-use. I took it home and stared working on it. I found dry and broken fuel lines among other problems. The chain oiler also needed work. I finally got it fixed and found this little saw was a great little saw. It starts and runs very well every time I use it for pruning, small tree removal and cutting cord wood for my fireplace. I believe it will outlive me. Thanks for the info about the “AVT”.

  5. Still can’t find any information on the MS 365. It has a decompression valve so must be on the top end. I really need to know which other model’s parts will fit. Any info?
