The STIHL E20 is a now-discontinued corded electric chainsaw (230 V AC) introduced in 1985.
It is designed for heavy-duty homeowner or light professional use. Being mains-powered, it runs quietly and requires no fuel mixing. The MSE 210 C-E is the current equivalent of the E20.
STIHL E20
The STIHL E20 (1985 – 1998) sits between the lighter-duty E10 (1973 – 1984) and the heavier, slower-cutting E30 (1967 – 1985).
The E10 was designed for light domestic use, with a smaller motor and limited bar compatibility. In contrast, the E20 features a 1.8 kW motor, supports a 16″ bar with a 3/8″ chain, and adds modern features like automatic chain lubrication and a chain brake.
The E30, while more industrial, was slower and torque-focused, making the E20 the most balanced of the three in terms of power, speed, and usability.
STIHL E20 reviews
You don’t often see people sharing about saws like the E20. There just aren’t as many of them out there.
However, here are some comments from the STIHL Chainsaw Fans group members.
- Rody said, “The E20 is the wisest addition to anyone who saws wood near other houses.”
- Phroden said, “They last a looong time if you take a little care of ’em.”
- Kaden said, “It’s good for cutting bushes.”

I sold several of these throughout the years. Mostly to sawmills. They used them in the back of the mill to trim with.
They held up better than their gas powered counterparts. No starter parts to wear out.
They are stout!

Make sure you keep the e20 stored in dry conditions. Mine got some corrosion in the motor, which wrote it off.

Electric Motor
The E20’s 1.8 kW motor delivers strong torque. Users report it “comfortably [pulls] 3/8″ chain on a 16″ bar”, making it capable for firewood cutting and yard tasks.
The electric design means no fuel filling, no engine exhaust, and simpler maintenance (no carburetor or spark plug).
Chain Brake and Safety
It includes STIHL’s standard safety systems. A Quickstop chain brake (inertia-activated) stops the chain in kickback events. A throttle trigger interlock and handguards add protection.
Tool-less Adjustment
Later electric models feature a Quick Chain Adjuster for easy tensioning, and the E20 likely has a similar quick-tension system (inspired by the MSE 210’s “QCA” feature.
Ergonomics
It is built as a professional-grade saw (stout construction, metal gear casing), but relatively heavy. It balances power and weight; however, a heavy-duty extension cord is needed for mobility.
STIHL electric saws
The E20 is another interesting electric saw from STIHL.
