STIHL – founded in 1926, developed following the II World War in a matter of less than two decades, to the leading chain saw manufacturer in the world today. With an export share of more than 80 % of its production, STIHL and its products are represented in more than 126 countries. The STIHL sales organization covers a network of 25,000 dealers.
STIHL has more than 40 years of experience in the line of production of power chain saws, guide bars and saw chains. The entire STIHL chain saw is really homogenous in performance and precision engineered. Chains and guide bars are manufactured in STIHL’s own facilities and therefore can be thoroughly adjusted and matched to each individual saw model. In addition to power chain saws STIHL’s line of products includes: Power earth augers and drills, cut-off saws, brush cutters, mist blowers and tilting saws. STIHL has more than 2000 employees in its 4 production plants to produce them.
The photo taken from the plane shows plant I, the parent factory. It is situated in the lovely Rems Valley near Waiblingen – only about 7 miles (12 km) from Stuttgart. In this plant STIHL produces the drive units of the STIHL power chain saws and of the other agricultural and forestry machines. Here you will also find the big warehouse containing both raw material and various finished parts. The Engineering Departments and Executive – and Administration Offices are located in the modern, tall building.
STIHL developed the AV-System to eliminate vibration.
Saw engines and rotating chains cause vibration. This cannot be avoided. The Anti-Vibration System (protected for STIHL by a patent), through carefully and exactly determined buffer areas, practically absorb these harmful vibrations in STIHL-AV saws.
The STIHL-AV handle and system is another reason why professionals all over the World insist on STIHL chain saws. They let you cut longer and more efficiently with less fatigue.
STIHL-QuickStop, the chain brake with the split clutch makes cutting so much safer.
Even the most experienced cutter can have occasions, where the chain saw suddenly kicks back. In such a case the chain brake acts instantly and brings the chain to stop – in the same split second – without running on.
The engine, however, are not affected by this. A special split clutch separates the engine power between crankshaft and chain sprocket: The engine thus keeps running.
When working, the chain saw can be started without danger and with engaged brake, or can be carried from tree to tree with the engine running. In both cases the chain is effectively stopped by the STIHL Quick-Stop system.
Less wear by STIHL Oilomatic chain.
The STIHL Oilomatic and the new Oilomatic-S chain provide better and more reliable lubrication. An oil groove, which is pressed into each drive link, guides the lubricant precisely to the parts with most wear: At moving surfaces and rivet joints. Thus these parts are steadily moving in an “oil bath”. This means considerable reduction of wear. Chain, guide bar and chain sprocket also have a longer service life.
STIHL – always a step ahead.
Even in the earliest years, research has been the main concern at STIHL. STIHL became the true pioneer in chain saw development. Here are a few examples: AV-handle, and system, automatic chain lubrication, electronic ignition, the Oilomatic chain, the QuickStop chain brake with split clutch.
Regardless of the job – you will find exactly the right saw in the STIHL line.

STIHL TS with carriage
STIHL cut-off saws are among the most popular tools used in the road construction. Since working on the ground, in a bent position is very tiring, STIHL developed the “cutting carriage” onto which the TS 08 can be mounted with a few manipulations.
The operator can now work comfortably in upright position, can easily control the job situation and does not fatigue as easily.
The cutting carriage permits cutting exactly to the inch and even the cutting depth can be precisely controlled.
STIHL does not only have its own guide bar and saw chain production but also manufactures maintenance tools and big machines for large timber.
STIHL ES 120
Many saw mills, veneer, plywood and parquet flooring plants have the tilting saw ES 120 integrated into the flow of material on their landing as a cut-off saw. Its special advantage: Big cutting efficiency due to log of 83″ (210 cm) diameter and excellent cutting accuracy – thus avoiding wood loss.
50 Hz., 380 V (current), 15 HP (DIN), (11 kW).
Cutting lengths: 42, 50, 58, 69 and 83″ (105, 125, 145, 175 and 210 cm).
STIHL Oilomatic-S
When bucking, or limbing, the saw sometimes has occasion to suddenly kick back. To help avoid this, the new Oilomatic-S safety chain is provided with a newly developed safety rivet located in front of each cutter. This safety link shortens the action of the depth gauge on the guide bar nose, thus providing a smoother cut to avoid kick-back.
Important: A plus-feature of the anti-kickback safety chain is that it does not reduce cutting efficiency.
STIHL chain plastic boxes
STIHL Oilomatic chains are packed in practical, re-usable, clear plastic boxes.
These boxes are gasoline and oil-proof and therefore can also be used for chain maintenance (oil bath).
STIHL Rollomatic
A star-nosed roller in the guide bar carries the chain around the bar tip. This lowers the chain drag and friction and decreases the wear of guide bar, chain and sprocket.
STIHL Duromatic
The reliable solid type of guide bar made from special wear-resistant steel.
Induction hardened guide rails and gliding surfaces, as well the additional stellite tipping at the main wearing points of the bar, provide longer service-life.
Duromatic and Rollomatic guide bars are chrome-plated or galvanized and therefore rust resistant.
STIHL HOS
A semi-automatic electric chain sharpener for chipper chain. Its 220 volts-single-phase alternating current motor plugs into a regular socket.
50 Hz., 0.25 HP (DIN), (0.15 kW).
The engine also can be supplied for a current of 110 V/60 Hz.
STIHL USG
This universal chain sharpener has mainly been developed for sharpening stretcher chain of all kinds. However, with a few changes, it can also be converted to sharpening chipper chain.
220 volt single-phase alternating current motor for regular sockets, 50 Hz., 0.25 HP (DIN), (0.15 kW).
The motor can also be supplied for current of 110 V/60 Hz.
We have already introduced the main factory. STIHL also produces its products in two additional plants and a third is under construction.
Plant II
Plant II is also located in the Neustadt-Waiblingen area, about one mile (2 km) from Plant I. Here, we mainly manufacture guide bars and chains, but also assemble the STIHL earth augers and drills.
Plant III
Plant III at Wiechs/am Randen, near the Swiss border provides additional capacity for chain production.
However, at present Plant III has reached its full capacity. Approximately 60 additional employees will be working in the new plant (our drawing).
Plant IV
At Prüm/Eifel, near the famous “Nürburgring” race track, STIHL has built Europe’s most modern die-casting factory. Here, by means of nearly total automatic production, most of the die-cast components for the different STIHL tools are manufactured. Plant IV makes the STIHL operations practically independent from reliance upon subcontractors in the die-cast field.
