The Green STIHL Contra Lightning Military/Army/BUND Version

| | , ,

You know the orange Contra, and you might have seen the gold Contra, but did you know about the green Contra?

The saw pictured here belonged to Beau Wendholt, who moderates the Stihl Contra, Lightening, 070, 090, 1106, and 1109 Chainsaw group on Facebook.

He has since sold or traded it but gave us permission to share his pictures.

Beau shared:

I have a military Contra/Lightning that I would like to trade.

The muffler has been repainted and the bonnet is aftermarket. The crate & kit is neither perfect nor complete, but still very nice.

I bought it as a runner, but have honestly never tried to start it. It has good compression and strong spark.

It has (prior to me purchasing it) been disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled with new seals and gaskets.

What you see in these photos is what I have and what is up for trade.

He said:

Regardless of a full trade or a partial trade in either direction, I’ll throw out everything I can think of that I’d be interested in:

– Sand cast Contras or parts (specifically need an FM logo recoil spring cover)
– Early, embossed top, 090AV
– Factory 070 or 090 with electronic ignition
– 090G S1 or S2 stone saw
– 090G saw or parts
– Contra G or GS saw or parts (gearbox cover, standard or tube style muffler, etc.)
– Contra S saw or parts
– PM 390
– Solo Super Rex

The saw is in fantastic condition for its age.

Some doubt whether the green is original, but Beau shared:

The green bonnets with the Stihl parts numbers are in fact original.

A person who previously owned my green Contra was doing some research and contacted Stihl.

This is one of the responses he received:

“We are in receipt of and thank you for your e-mail.

Those green units were made for the various governments around the world. They sometimes would say BUND on the top. Originally that unit likely had a green top cover. It may have been replaced at some time and the Green parts were not available at the time.

Thank you again for your e-mail and if we can be of any further assistance please feel free to contact us again.

Best regards,

This saw is even cooler than the STIHL 045 AVEK army saw.

The aftermarket top cover.

The repainted muffler.

Beau shared a ton of pictures…

In the comments from Beau’s post, another member, Björn, said:

Very nice ‘Zivilschutz Bund’ Contra.

Please remind that Contras never were used by german army.

These khaki brown ones were used in the Zivilschutz Bund. Easy to see on the ZB letters on the box.

The “Zivilschutz Bund” is Civil Protection in Germany.

Björn also shared this pic, saying, “Now, I also believe that the green lids were aftermarket… I just found these Contras with red hoods.”

And Brenton said, “Very nice !! I got its little brother.”

He shared this image.

I also ended up with this picture of what might be an original green top cover, but I’m not sure of the source.

So, what do you think of the green Contra?
