STIHL MS 201 T Chainsaw Review: M-Tronic Vs Non-M-Tronic, Specs, Price

| | , ,

The STIHL MS 201 T is a 35 cc professional top handle saw.

There is also an MS 201 non-top handle version, which we won’t be covering here. The top handle version is by far the better-selling model so it deserves an article of its own!

While the 201 T isn’t as popular or sought-after as the earlier MS 200 T (considered by many to be the best top handle ever), it’s still considered to be a good saw.

Here’s what people like and don’t like about it, versions, specs, price info, and everything else.

Images come from eBay seller Sherman_Saws and are used with permission. This STIHL MS 201 T sold on eBay for US $549.99 in Sept 2023.

STIHL MS 201 T Versions

There are two versions of this Series 1145 chainsaw with the following production years:

  • Stihl MS 201 T | 2011 – 2015 – the first edition
  • Stihl MS 201 T – CE – non-M-Tronic with Easy2Start feature
  • Stihl MS 201 T C-M, 201 C-M | 2015 – Current – the updated version with M-Tronic engine

Sometimes you will see another version, the “MS 201 TC-M Z”, with the Z indicating a spark-arresting muffler, but this is standard on all 201s now and usually not designated.

There are not many MS 201 TC-E (non-M-tronic) saws out there. The E in this case is the comfort feature “Easy2Start” which is also now standard. These are 201 T-C saws without M-Tronic.

The biggest issue with 201 T versions is whether it’s an M-Tronic model or not, because they are very different engines, and some folk prefer non-M-Tronic.

STIHL MS 201 T specs (non-M-Tronic)

STIHL’s M-Tronic feature is an advanced engine management system designed to optimize engine performance for their power tools, particularly chainsaws.

This technology ensures consistent engine performance, reduced fuel consumption, and simplified starting procedures. M-Tronic electronically controls the fuel metering in real time, adjusting for external conditions like temperature, altitude, and fuel quality.

It eliminates the need for manual carburetor adjustments, as it automatically adapts to different working conditions. This results in a more efficient and responsive tool, which offers better handling and maintenance for the user, making it ideal for professional and heavy-duty applications.

We covered this more extensively in our STIHL MS 261 C-M review where you can see the reasons people don’t like the M-Tronic feature. The earlier version of the 201 T is preferred by many despite the stated benefits of the newer saw.

STIHL MS 201 T Reviews

First, positive user reviews of the 201 T from the Stihl Chainsaw Fans FB group

Joe said:

Got a 201 T C-M at work and i do like it. It’s a little better than the regular 201 T. The first 201s were dogs, but decent if modded.

I own a 200 T and even modded the 201 T can’t touch that saw. Over all the 201 t-cm is a great saw.

Nathan said:

I bought one for climbing and love it. Now it comes with me when ever I’m in the hills or hunting for blow downs.

Great saw no issues with it and only saw I’ve left stock.

Andrew said:

If you’re needing a top-handle saw you definitely can’t go wrong with getting one of these.

Perfect amount of power and fuel capacity to get a lot of jobs done even on one tank of gas.

Mike said:

Buy it, dont look back!

I’ve had mine now about 2 months, I work it hard daily in my bucket. Absolutely love it! Tuck it in at night, sing it a lullaby and it’ll be ready to rock n roll the next day!

Also… I just put a 16″ bar on mine. Game changer for me, best upgrade I’ve dont yet. I love it.

John said:

I’ve always thought the 200t was the best, which they are in most categories, until I got a 201.

201s are better on fuel and just as powerful once you set up the saw. I love my 201 now.

Lee said:

I work as a tree pruner and we use them constantly!

We have both the 201t tc and 201 tcm. Well balanced, light, starts well. All in all a tough saw!

And some shorter positive reviews:

  • Jim said: “The 201 is a little heavy and doesn’t give much more added power than the MS 194 T.”
  • Brandon said: “Great saw if you’re climbing!”
  • Kyle said: “Heavier than 200t. Instant power and more economical on gas.”
  • Travis said: “My go-to for bucket work and. Big wood in the tree tops. Otherwise, I get by with the 194”
  • Steve said: “Best climbing saw on the market, now the MS200t is not available.”
  • Tony said: “Great saws. I climb and use it most days, and I’ve had no problems.”
  • Ryder said: “They are awesome. Don’t be afraid of the M-Tronic.”
  • Michael said: “It’s no 200t but it doesn’t suck as bad as just about everything else.”
  • Matt said: “Best top handle on the market.”

Most of the comments from owners and users of 201 Ts are very positive, but here are a few of the negative reviews/cons.

Rick said:

200t is the way to go ….. the new 201t and 201t-cm are ok but suck compared to the original 200t But that’s my personal preference.

Trey said:

Dude… get the 194!!!!

Just do it lol. Do a muffler mod, adjust the carb, and it cuts like a 201 for half the price.

Chase said:

Always end up having idle problems with all of mine. But they’re one of the best climbing saws. I’ve tried a good many out.

Zane said:

Had mine for about 4 years. Have had to change solenoid, handle, and some plastic after my regular caribeaner on it let it fly. I like my 200 Ts better.

Dustin said:

My brand new one seems like it has no power compared to the one 6 months ago… put 2 new chains and a bar and still seems like it is struggling.

And John said:

So I broke down and bought a brand new Stihl 201 T climbing saw… nothing but flipping problems.

First it stalls. After almost every cut. And was an absolute pain in the rear end to start. And sometimes it just stalls during a cut.

Most reviews of the MS 201 T are really good, but some people either get a faulty saw, don’t know how to use it properly, or simply prefer other Stihl models better.

This is how Stihl described the original version:

The “ultimate arborist saw” just got even better! Designed for tree trimming professionals looking for reduced-emission equipment, the STIHL MS 201 T chain saw uses advanced engine technology to reduce engine emissions by a remarkable 70% over previous models. In addition, the MS 201 T delivers 20% better fuel economy, providing longer run times between refueling, and an improved filtration system allows for 30% longer operation between filter maintenance.

The MS 201 T chain saw is designed with user comfort in mind, with reduced vibration and improved ergonomics to reduce operator fatigue. For in-tree cutting, the built-in harness ring provides balanced distribution of chain saw weight. Its well-balanced, top-handle design is ideal for use in the confined conditions in trees, and the Master Control Lever™ provides easier starting, operating and stopping.

And the MS 201 T included these features:

  • Scavenging engine technology reduces emissions by 70% and reduces fuel consumption by up to 20%
  • Master Control Lever™
  • Captured guide bar nut
  • Built-in retractable carry ring
  • Adjustable oil pump
  • STIHL PICCO™ SUPER 3 Saw Chain
  • Top handle (T)

The 201T C-M is for sale on Northern Tool where you can see a description of the new version. The M-Tronic system is the only real difference between the two. The M-Tronic version may be slightly heavier.

Bar And Chain

The MS 201 T is suitable for a 12 – 16 inch bar, with most people opting for 12 or 14″.

Here are comments from users.

Robert said:

I prefer the 12″. They cut great in a variety of woods with that on. Doesn’t struggle, and it helps keep the weight down a bit. Next size up for me is the 500i with a 20″.

Anthony said:

A 12” will rip. Especially if you run the .043 bar/chain that goes on a polesaw.

Chris said:

I always run a 16 on my Stihl 020 and 200s. I haven’t needed to buy a 201 yet so haven’t run one but a couple of times.

Jesse said:

I have this with a 14-inch bar and it rocks. I drop small trees and it is great.

A few shorter comments:

  • Angelo said: “16 is perfect on it.”
  • Kevin said: “I have a 201 tc with a 14 on it. I love it.”
  • Allen said: “I keep one with a 12″, one with 14”, and even a little msa 161 t with a 10″.”
  • Alan said: “16” light on mine and it does just fine! 12″ I have the ECHO 2511t for.”
  • Mike said: “Most folks run 14 inch bars around here on top handle saws.”
  • Trey said: “14 definitely. The 201 likes a 14 inch bar.”

Price And Parts

There are often Stihl MS 201 Ts listed for sale on eBay and other online marketplaces where they usually fetch a good price if they’re in good condition.

As we shared at the start of this article, the saw pictured sold for US$549.99 in September 2023.

The seller, Sherman Saws, shared this description:

Beautiful STIHL MS201t top handle chainsaw!

Runs, Oils, Idles, and cuts Great! Everything works as it should.

Please view all photos closely for a detailed condition description. Please do not assume anything not pictured is included. Please note that the saw may need to be tuned to your specific elevation.

Brand new the saw is selling for between US$800 – $850, so you can save a few hundred dollars by buying a second-hand chainsaw.

Because the MS 201 T is still being produced, most parts are very easy to come by.

Of course, over the past few years, there have been supply disruptions, but things have mostly returned to normal now.

Parts can be found through your local Stihl dealer, or:

Stihl FB groups are the best place to find hard-to-get parts for Stihl chainsaws.

Stihl MS 201T C-M Chainsaw

So that’s the STIHL MS 201 T!

All-in-all, most folks think it’s a very good saw for professional arboreal or tree care work.

It’s powerful, easy to climb with, and reliable. And it’ll work hard for years.

Stihl climbing chainsaws are the best top-handle chainsaws you can hope to buy.

If one of these saws is out of your budget and you don’t want to buy used, consider Holzfforma’s G111 which is a clone of the MS 200 T.

But at the end of the day, if it’s not a STIHL, it’s not a Stihl.
