We came across this unusual STIHL 024 AV EQ on ArboristSite. It is apparently a special Stihl “distributors only” model.
The strange thing about it is that it has much more orange than a standard 024!
On a regular 024, only the top cover is white. But on this saw, the front casing around the oil tank and the clutch cover is orange.
It might not seem like a big deal, but to collectors and enthusiasts, these sorts of things are awesome!
It’s very unusual to see a cover like this.
STIHLTHEDEERE, the arboristsite.com user who made the post, said:
I recently came across a NOS/unfueled Stihl 024 in a box. The strange thing is, the case is not white, it is painted stihl orange.
I was told Stihl distributers, not dealers, were given these for display purposes only?
I have never seen, or heard of this saw. Anyone else? Saw appears to be a complete functioning unit, just a different color.
He also shared, “I am sure these saws were never sold to the general public. So not much would be available. This came from a very good friend of mine, who is also my distributor.”
Comment from other members of the forum included:
- “Beautiful saw! Very interesting. Have seen quite a few 024s but never one of those. Gonna keep it or sell?”
- “Very very cool if you ask me…”
- “Very cool indeed. Did it come with the large elasto start or did you put that on? Is it made in the States or Germany?”
- “Very cool saw! Will it be fueled and used or just a shelf queen?”
- “Wow thats a neat looking color scheme.”
- “I’d have that thing on eBay in a hot minute.”
And user Duane(Pa) said:
I have never seen one like that and I don’t think I would ever part with it either!!
I have a few beaters that I have thought about having powdered. I have always been nuts about anything orange.
In response to those questions, STIHLTHEDEERE answered:
- “Sorry, this saw cannot and will not ever be for sale. I hope I don’t get into trouble posting pics.”
- “It is a West German saw.”
- “It will not be used. It sits in my office beside my NOS 066 flat top.”
And:
The saw is as I got it, other than the fancy dog kit. I am very fond of the 024s, for what reason I dont know. I have a bunch, some in new condition, some well used. I own all versions, AV-AVS-WOODBOSS-SUPER.
Here is what the standard Stihl 024 looks like…
It’s a small 42 cc saw that was made between 1982 and 1989.
There is also a 44.3 cc Super version of the 024.
The STIHL 024 is a cool old chainsaw, but this unusual “distributors only” version is even cooler.
Others in the comments wondered if it was a prank, like the guy painted the saw himself, but he appears to be genuine.
What do you think?
