A long, long, long time ago, back in 2006, STIHL offered these free downloadable chainsaw computer wallpapers.
They’re no longer available on STIHL’s website today, but I found them on the Wayback Machine, and so here they are, along with the content typed out to make them a little easier to read.
STIHL STG
STIHL STG – 1926 – 1948

This electric chainsaw was the first to be produced by the company. Andreas Stihl started out in 1926 as a machine manufacturer so that the electrically driven cross-cutting saw which he had developed on the drawing board could finally be produced in series. By then, a number of trial machines had already been used successfully in the forestry companies’ mill yards and sawmills.
The power required for sawing was delivered by a 2.2 kW DC motor, with modified wiring, it could also be operated on a 3-phase supply. This electric saw was consequently also available on demand with 3-phase motor.
This electrically driven cross-cutting saw was also the first sawing machine to operate continuously and reliably, the culmination of numerous, sometimes hair-raising attempts to use motor power for sawing wood.
STIHL BK
STIHL BK – 1932 – 1938

The idea of using a petrol engine to drive the electric cross-cutting saw so that it could also be used in the forest gave rise in 1929 to “STIHL’s felling machine”. However, the relief afforded by the machine was limited by its considerable weight of 46 kg and two forest workers were needed to carry and operate the machine.
The STIHL BK can therefore be described as a milestone in chainsaw history. Although largely identical with the “felling machine” in design, this chainsaw was almost 20 kg lighter than its predecessor and also easier to operate on account of its compact size.
The power output of 4 HP as compared with the felling machine’s 6 HP proved sufficient, particularly since the chainsaw developed more lugging power in the working speed range thanks to its additional displacement of 4 cm³.
The STIHL BK was started with the aid of a leather strap which first had to be wound round the starter reel. Engine and transmission were positively connected following actuation of a clutch lever and the saw chain began to run. For this purpose, it was supplied with chain lubrication from a hand-operated pressure lubricator operated by the second person working the handpiece.
STIHL BBU 35
STIHL BBU 35 – 1936 – 1954

This chainsaw is one in a series of special models used in the yards and saw mills to cut the trunks to the required lengths.
The special feature of this “bar saw” was that the chain was guided over a bar outside the cut for its return travel, thus making it easy to cut through a trunk under tension, something which would have been impossible with a normal chainsaw, since the upper strand of the chain would have been jammed in the cut as it reclosed.
Bar saws were available as one or two-man models driven by a petrol engine or electric motor.
The STIHL BBU was a one-man saw which would be operated by one person standing upright in a comfortable position. It was also the first chainsaw with an automatic chain lubrication system permitting more convenient operation.
STIHL ESL
STIHL ESL – 1957 – 1967

Like its predecessors, the STIHL ESL was also designed and built primarily for use in sawmills, where it was used to cut the trunks to the required size in the mill yard, i.e. to remove all outgrowths, branch and root swellings. Two spiked bumpers indicate that the STIHL ESL was also used for cross-cutting.
A power output of 2.7 kW and a motor weight of 17.0 kg were a respectable feat of engineering in those days and in view of the materials available.
Moreover, the machine included a swivel gear permitting convenient operation with horizontally or vertically positioned bar and chain.
The STIHL ESL has become famous as a handy and durable electric saw for use by the woodworking trade.
STIHL 07 S
STIHL 07 S – 1961 – 1968

The STIHL 07 S shows that a machine’s function or purpose inevitably results in a certain form while at the same time leaving sufficient scope for an attractive product design.
It is ultimately irrelevant whether the considerable number of machines built was attributable to its outstanding design – and for which the chainsaw won several awards – or to its excellent performance.
The displacement of 75 cm³ yielded a power output of 3.3 kW (4.8 HP) with a weight of only 10.0 kg. In 1961, this was a technical masterpiece which made the STIHL 07 S a versatile and all-round chainsaw. Another feature worth mentioning in this context is that this was the first chainsaw to include a variable-flow oil pump specially developed by STIHL with a delivery flow which could be adjusted in line with the different lengths of the bar and chain.
This all-purpose chainsaw was successfully used not only by the forestry industry, in medium stands and as a limbing saw for big timber, but also in saw mills, the construction trade, by carpenters, fire services, and by emergency rescue teams.
STIHL 051 AV
STIHL 051 AV – 1972 – 1989

This powerful logging saw clearly proves that technical innovations are incorporated into series machines by STIHL as soon as they have reached a corresponding stage in development.
Launched onto the market as the STIHL 050 AV in 1968, the machine was subsequently improved in a number of details as the model was consistently upgraded. The increase in power combined with the installation of an electronic ignition system made it necessary to enlarge the air filter housing, thus distinctively changing the machine’s shape so that it was finally renamed STIHL 051 AV in 1972.
An “intelligent” variable-flow oil pump had already been introduced for the chain lubricant with the STIHL 050 AV. The STIHL 051 AV additionally featured the QuickStop chain brake and a throttle trigger interlock to prevent inadvertent acceleration. The anti-vibration system was reinforced and returned in accordance with the high demands imposed on this machine.
The functional reliability of the electronic ignition system was convincingly demonstrated by the STIHL 051 AV, which was used throughout the world and sometimes also in extreme climatic conditions.
STIHL 036 QS
STIHL 036 QS – since 1995

The STIHL 036 QS is one of the most modern and indisputably also one of the most interesting chainsaws to have been built.
With its considerable power output and relatively low weight, the standard version of the STIHL 036 covers a large range of uses – from forestry and agriculture to industry and trade.
Professionals who work with chainsaws every single day have increasingly chosen the STIHL 036 QS. Due to the additional safety function of the QS version, the employers’ liability insurance association emphatically recommends the use of this model for all less experienced users in every branch of industry in which a chainsaw is required.
QS stands for the special version of the QuickStop chain brake and means that two chain brake systems interact here.
One is the QuickStop chain brake which is automatically tripped in every working position as soon as a sufficiently strong kickback is registered or when the back of the operator’s hand comes into contact with the hand guard serving as an activating lever.
The other is a coasting brake for the chain as revealed by the oversize button for the throttle trigger interlock.
The QS system ensures that the chain is securely braked when idle. It can only start up when this button is depressed and immediately braked to a stop as it is released.
