In 2003, STIHL issued a safety recall for certain MS 270C, MS 280, and MS 280C chainsaws sold between August 2002 and March 2003. The recall was prompted by a fuel tank vent that may have been installed incorrectly, creating a risk of fuel leaks, fire, and serious injury.
Owners of affected chainsaws were instructed to stop using them immediately and have the fuel tank vent replaced free of charge by an authorized STIHL dealer. This recall has long since concluded and no longer affects consumers today.

STIHL CHAIN SAW MODELS MS 270C, MS 280 and MS 280CIn cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, STIHL Inc. is recalling certain STIHL MS 270C, MS 280 and MS 280C chain saws. The chain saws were manufactured and distributed in the United States by STIHL Incorporated of Virginia Beach, Virginia.
If you own a STIHL MS 270C, MS 280 and MS 280C chain saw that was purchased between August 2002 and March 2003 and falls within the serial number range given below, PLEASE DISCONTINUE USING THE UNIT IMMEDIATELY.
The fuel tank vent may have been installed incorrectly and could become dislodged. In such circumstances fuel could potentially leak resulting in a fire and serious or fatal injury. The fuel tank vent needs to be replaced and installed by an authorized STIHL dealer at no cost to you.
