With its distinctive reduction gearbox and enormous cutting capacity, the STIHL 090 G stood apart from the other saws in the 090 family. It followed the earlier Contra G and 137 cc Contra GS, continuing STIHL’s small line of gear-drive chainsaws built to pull very long bars through oversized timber.

Unlike the direct-drive 137 cc 090, the 090 G combined a 106 cc engine with a 2:1 gear reduction drive, giving it tremendous pulling power for working through exceptionally large and difficult timber.

Below is a collection of original STIHL 090 G advertisements, brochures, catalogue pages, manuals and other period literature. Together, they show how STIHL promoted the gear-drive saw in different markets—as a heavy-duty production machine that could handle the biggest logs while still keeping plenty of engine power in reserve.

The World’s most powerful gear drive chain saw — specifically designed to handle the hardest of big timbers.

A favorite of pulpwood and veneer production cutters, the STIHL 090 G has also proven its power and dependability in pole yards and lumber mills where sandy or abrasive conditions specifically require a gear drive.

Why is the STIHL 090 G so powerful?

First: because of its super powere and 6.47 cu.in. displacement engine.

Second: because its 2:1 gear reduction greatly increases the lugging capacity and provides more than enough torque reserve for even the most demanding job.

The STIHL 090 G is essentially a one-man saw and its 27 lb (12.3 kgs) power-head with a 25 inch (63 cms) guide bar can handle most large timber.

For felling and bucking really big timber — 10 feet (3 meters) to 15 feet (4.5 meters) in thickness — a helper’s handle fitting into an opening in the nose of guide bars up to 60 inches (150 cm) makes it ideal for a two-man operation.

The STIHL 090 G can handle the toughest job or timber.

The advance design and engineering of the STIHL reduction gear provides double the lugging capacity of the saw chain without affecting the balance or ease of handling.

The saw for oversize timber

The STIHL-090 G is a saw for specialists. For veneering plants and other factories which have to process huge exotic timber. And for lumbermen who have to cut iron-hard trees.

It has a power of 10 HP. This power alone is sufficient to cut even the biggest trees.

But in addition to that the STIHL-090 G is equipped with a reduction gear which increases the logging capacity many times. Therefore it has sufficient power reserves even for the heaviest works.

The longest guide bar for the STIHL-090 G has a length of 60 inches. With this guide bar it is possible to fell trees of 12 feet diameter and more and to buck logs with a thickness of up to 10 feet. (Those giants are better worked by two men: The guide bar nose can be fitted with a helper’s handle which can be held by the second man until the saw is immersed in the timber. Then the helper’s handle can be removed. But otherwise the STIHL-090 G is a real one-man saw. Its weight is not more than 33 lbs. equipped with a 25.2 inch guide bar.)

By the way, the STIHL-090 G is of course also available with the STIHL AV-handle. Its vibration dampening effect is especially noticeable on this powerful gear saw. You can work with it for hours without getting tired.

Petrol-powered geared stone saw, available in one-man and two-man versions, for cutting sandstone, tuff and similar types of soft or medium-hard stone.
