The Lombard 4D is a 77 cc American-made chainsaw produced in 1957–1958 in Ashland, Massachusetts.
The example pictured here belongs to Edward Knapp. Ed describes it as being in nice original condition and says he had it running a few years ago, but it has been sitting since and he hasn’t tried starting it again. Anyone interested can contact him through his Facebook Marketplace listing.
Powered by a Power Products AH-47 engine advertised at 4 horsepower, it uses gear reduction to drive the chain—a feature that sets it apart from many later direct-drive saws. Its cast-magnesium construction, rigid handles, and manual chain oiler are typical of this generation of one-man chainsaws.
The 4D was also known as the “Woodlot Wonder,” a name appearing on its owner’s and parts manual (below). With its rounded fuel tank, prominent cylinder fins, and tubular handles, it has plenty of the character that makes these early Lombards interesting collector saws.
