12 Wood Burning Stove Brands That Are Made In The USA

| |

You might be surprised to learn that there are still a great many companies manufacturing wood-burning stoves in the USA. We’ve put together this list so that you can discover quality American-made wood stoves, some of which are even produced with US-sourced materials.

Things can change, and this list is based on our best knowledge, so be sure to check again before considering making any purchases. That being said, these companies are all highly patriotic and proud of manufacturing wood stoves in the US, so it’s likely to remain that way.

1. Flame Innovation

Flame Innovation (Sandpoint, Idaho) is a family-owned maker of tiny wood stoves and smokeless firepits designed for small homes and outdoor use. Their models – for example, the Caboose (heats 200–600 ft²) and Steelhead – feature a patented 2-stage “gasifier” combustion for very long burn times. All Flame Innovation products are “all Made in the USA” and hand-crafted in Idaho. Founder Dusty Henderson (of 509 Fabrication) and his father started the company, and today each stove is hand-welded and assembled on-site. Beyond wood stoves (the Mini-Me pellet stove 2.0 is another model), Flame Innovation also makes the patent-pending Revolve smokeless fire pit.

Buck traces its roots to a one-man shop over 40 years ago; today it’s a global powerhouse in heating and outdoor products. They emphasize “Made in America” quality and offer a wide range of wood stoves and accessories. Common wood models include the catalytic Model 91 (Buck’s best-seller, heats up to ~3200 ft²), the Model 21NC and ZC21 inserts, and small Buck Camp Stoves (“Big Buck” and “Little Buck”) for cabins/camping. The Buck Model 91 (shown on the website) has the familiar classic cast-iron look, while their newer Camp stoves use 11-gauge steel for rugged outdoor use.

3. ComfortBilt (Carolina Wood Stoves)

ComfortBilt – marketed as Carolina Wood Stoves – is a US brand of freestanding cast-iron stoves made in North Carolina. The Carolina line includes models 21NC, 74NC, and 81 (NC stands for “non-catalytic”). These stoves are “proudly made in the USA” and touted as heirloom-quality products. The company highlights sturdy craftsmanship and modern efficiency while evoking old-style charm. (ComfortBilt also makes pellet stoves, but the Carolina series are wood-burning.) As of 2024, the Carolina 21NC and 74NC were popular in dealers’ catalogs. ComfortBilt was founded in 2013 and is based in Wendell, NC.

The company advertises that its freestanding wood stoves have been “Proudly made in the US since 1976”. Englander’s lineup includes both modern EPA-certified cast-iron units and simple heavy-duty styles. Popular models have names like Big Woodstove, Brilliant, and Medium Woodstove (300–600 ft²). These stoves emphasize no-nonsense reliability: for example, the Model 10 Large Wood Stove and Model 30 Insert (EPA-certified) are commonly sold. (Englander is now owned by SBI, a Canadian parent, but the America-made branding remains.)

5. U.S. Stove Company (Ashley Hearth / US Stove)

The historic US Stove Company (now part of the U.S. Stove/American Hearth Group) has been “keeping America warm” since 1869. Based in Tennessee with roots in New York, it designs and engineers its stoves in South Pittsburgh. Although some parts are global, many of their products are assembled domestically. U.S. Stove/Ashley Hearth makes dozens of models including cast-iron classics like the Ashley Hearth series (e.g. Belvedere, Alexandria) and small cabin stoves. An example is the Belvedere 1100 (EPA-certified, heats up to 2000 ft²). The US Stove catalog also includes tiny stoves (the “750 sq ft Tiny Wood Stove” TH-100) and cookstoves. In short, it’s a long-running all-purpose stove brand in America.

6. Kuma Stoves

Kuma Stoves (Rathdrum, Idaho) specializes in high-performance cast-iron wood stoves. The company’s site proclaims a “world class manufacturer of wood-burning stoves… Made in the USA”. Kuma’s line (sometimes labeled “LE” series) includes models like the Aspen LE-1, Tamarack LE-1, Cambridge LE-1, etc. – all with large fireboxes and rugged cast-iron bodies. For instance, the Aspen LE-1 is a popular boilerplate cast-iron stove with a big glass door (and its own steamer top). Kuma stoves are highly configurable (different legs, cooktops, etc.) and built from “high-grade materials.” They emphasize durability and efficiency: Kuma advertises that their stoves “are built to withstand the test of time”.

7. Unforgettable Fire, LLC

unforgettable fire wood stove

Unforgettable Fire (Murphysboro, Illinois) produces mini high-efficiency wood stoves. Their three main models – Kimberly, Katydid, and Krikit – are all hand-made in the USA. These tiny stoves use a unique two-stage gasifier combustion that gives very long burns (8–12 hours) on a single load. The Kimberly, a 56-pound stove originally designed for boats/RVs, is UL-listed for tiny-house use; the Katydid is a slightly larger version; the Krikit is bigger still. All three carry the “Proudly Made in USA” badge. Interesting history: the Kimberly was developed by the inventor who couldn’t find any suitable micro stove, and Unforgettable Fire even won EPA design-challenge awards for these models. Their website emphasizes extended burn times and nearly smokeless output.

8. Woodstock Soapstone Company

Woodstock Soapstone Company (West Lebanon, New Hampshire) hand-builds hybrid wood stoves with heavy soapstone cores. Founded in 1995, they revived the 19th-century soapstone stove tradition. Key models include the Fireview, Keystone, Palladian and Survival (all soapstone), and the Progress and Ideal steel hybrids. Notably, their Progress Hybrid (introduced 2011) was the first EPA-certified wood stove to combine both catalytic and secondary combustion. Woodstock’s stoves are known for ultra-long burn times and very clean combustion. One famous tidbit: in 2013 their Ideal Steel Hybrid design won a U.S. Department of Energy design contest for clean wood stoves. All Woodstock stoves are made in NH (the company even oxidizes its own catalysts on-site).

9. HearthStone (Vermont Stove Company)

HearthStone (Morrisville, Vermont) is a long-running hearth company best known for soapstone-lined stoves. The brand’s history goes back to 1978. HearthStone stoves – such as the Lincoln, Castleton, Heritage, Shelburne, and Manchester models – feature 1¼″ soapstone panels backed by cast iron. Each stove is hand-assembled by skilled Vermont craftsmen; in fact every soapstone stove is signed by the builder as a mark of quality. HearthStone’s patented TruHybrid® combustion (a bypass/clean-burn catalyst system) boosts efficiency and clean-burning time. (HearthStone’s products also qualify for the US Tax Credit for clean wood stoves.) The company emphasizes “comfortable heat” from soapstone and has won awards for efficiency.

1o. Lopi (Travis Industries)

premium us made wood stove

Lopi is the flagship wood-stove brand of Travis Industries (Mukilteo, Washington), America’s largest privately owned hearth manufacturer. Lopi has built wood stoves since 1979, and today all Lopi appliances are “designed and hand-assembled” in Mukilteo. Popular Lopi models include the Big Wall, Grande, Rockland, Endeavor, and Big Yankee series. Lopi stoves typically feature heavy cast iron fireboxes and push-button GreenStart™ igniters. One interesting note: Lopi is known for cutting-edge clean-burning tech (their NexGen-Hybrid and GreenStart igniters). The “Evergreen NexGen-Hybrid” line and models like the Big Wall are examples of modern Lopi design. Overall, Lopi stoves combine a classic look with features like blower fans and catalytic inserts.

11. Vermont Castings

Defiant Wood-Burning Stove

Vermont Castings (Newport, Vermont) is a heritage brand of cast-iron wood stoves dating to the 1970s. Its first model, the Defiant, was created in 1975 (in response to the oil embargo) and launched the company’s legacy. Today’s Vermont Castings wood-stove lineup includes the Defiant, Encore FlexBurn, Dauntless, Intrepid, and Aspen C3 (the Aspen even has a small cooktop). All Vermont Castings stoves are “crafted and cast at our foundry in Vermont”, embodying old-timey style (rich paint colors, arched windows) with modern EPA ratings. Their FlexBurn system allows both high- and low-burn flexibility. The Defiant is the large model for big spaces, the Encore is mid-size, and the compact Aspen is designed for tiny rooms or cooking. Vermont Castings touts its stoves as “a testament to American craftsmanship” and emphasizes durability (their marketing calls it “the pinnacle” of cast-iron stoves).

12. Quadra-Fire (Fuel Products)

us made Quadra-Fire

Quadra-Fire (Libby, Montana) is a major American brand of wood-burning stoves (and inserts) made by Fuel Products International (FPI). Quadra-Fire’s wood stove models include the Discovery, Frontier, Mountain Heat, and classic Wilderness series (later renamed Frontier). They are built in the USA and are known for reliable performance. Notable features include Quadra-Fire’s patented “Quadra-Burn” secondary combustion system (four-point burn) for low emissions and high heat output. For example, the Discovery 2100 is a popular mid-size stove for small to medium rooms. Quadra-Fire stoves are often praised for ease-of-use and long burn times. (Quadra-Fire also sells high-end pellet stoves under the same name.)

Made In America

Each of these companies is currently manufacturing wood-burning stoves or cookstoves in the USA. They range from small “tiny home” stove makers to large heritage brands, but all can honestly claim an American-made product line (at least, at the time of writing).

There are many other wood stove companies, such as Tiny Wood Stoves, who design their products in the US, but manufacture in China or elsewhere. The businesses themselves are US owned and operated, but manufacturing is offshored. For some, that may be acceptable enough!
