Every John Deere Chainsaw Model: Production Years and Specifications

John Deere sold chainsaws for roughly four decades, from compact 34 cc pruning saws to an 82 cc Remington-built model, an 88 cc Homelite-built professional saw, and one corded-electric machine. This guide covers 62 documented production chainsaw models sold with John Deere branding.

Production dates marked “c.” are approximate. John Deere rarely published exact start and stop dates, so those spans are based on dated catalogs, advertisements, operator’s manuals, parts-list revisions, service literature, and surviving market records. Weights are dry, powerhead-only figures unless noted otherwise.

A Short History of John Deere Chainsaws

John Deere did not manufacture one continuous family of chainsaws in its own factory. Instead, it worked with several established power-equipment companies.

The first production saws came from DESA, the company behind Remington chainsaws. Kioritz Corporation, better known through its Echo brand, supplied most Deere saws from the late 1970s into the early 1990s.

Deere acquired Homelite in 1994, which led to several green versions of Homelite powerheads during the 1990s and early 2000s. The final CS-series saws were manufactured in Italy by Emak and were closely related to Efco models.

This outsourcing explains why Deere chainsaws from different periods share few parts. A Model 19, a 55SV, a 300CS, and a CS56 are Deere-branded saws, but they come from four distinctly different chainsaw families.

DESA and Remington-Built Gasoline Chainsaws: c. 1970–1979

John Deere’s earliest production chainsaws were manufactured by DESA and based on contemporary Remington designs. Deere parts and service publications document the 8, 9, 12, 14, 15, 17, 18, 19, 23, 61, 81, 81E, and 91. Preproduction machines described by former Deere personnel are not included.

John Deere 8 and John Deere 9

The 8 and 9 were bar-package or trim variations of the same DESA-built powerhead, closely related to the Remington Mighty Mite.

John Deere 12

The Model 12 used the DESA/Remington SL-9 platform. Deere literature replaced it with the nearly identical Model 14 for the 1973 model period.

John Deere 14

The 14 was the 1973-onward successor to the Model 12 and remained based on the Remington SL-9 chassis.

John Deere 15

This was the Deere version of the larger Remington SL-10 family.

John Deere 17

The Model 17 was based on the 59 cc Remington PL-4 platform. The Model 18 replaced its Deere designation for 1973.

The 18 continued the Model 17’s Remington PL-4 powerhead under Deere’s revised post-1972 designation.

John Deere 19

The Model 19 was related to the Remington PL-5. Replacement-bar catalogs sometimes show longer bars accepted by the shared chassis, but Deere applications concentrated on the 16- to 23-inch range.

John Deere 23

The 23 was the largest early Deere saw and corresponds to the Remington PL-55/PL-55A family. It should not be confused with the smaller 59 cc PL-4-based Models 17 and 18.

John Deere 61, John Deere 81, and John Deere 91

Deere grouped these models in the same service literature. They were Mighty Mite-family variations distinguished principally by trim, supplied bar, and retail configuration rather than by engine displacement.

John Deere 81E

  • Production years: c. 1973–1975

  • Weight: Approximately 3.9 kg (8.5 lb.), dry powerhead with starting equipment
  • Guide-bar range: 30–41 cm (12–16 in.)

The 81E was still a gasoline chainsaw. Its unusual feature was a 12-volt battery-powered electric starter. Collector references sometimes write the designation as 81ES, but Deere manuals use 81E.

Echo and Kioritz-Built Gasoline Chainsaws: c. 1976–Early 1990s

Kioritz Corporation of Japan manufactured Deere’s next and largest chainsaw family.

Most were direct relatives of Echo saws, although colors, handles, safety equipment, and regional packages could differ. An August 1977 John Deere advertisement (below) presented the 30, 40V, 50V, 60V, and 70V as a five-saw range.

The “V” in these gasoline model names does not indicate electrical voltage. Similarly, EV and SV are family designations and should not be used to estimate displacement.

John Deere 28

The Model 28 was related to the Echo CS-315. Deere’s official designation was 28, not the frequently repeated aftermarket name 28V.

The 30 was the Deere counterpart of the Echo CS-302. Deere operator’s manual OMM67287 identifies the saw simply as 30, not 30V.

John Deere 40V

This was the Deere version of the Echo CS-351VL.

John Deere 50V

The 50V corresponds to the Echo CS-452VL. Deere service literature contains a significant serial-number break at 39,001, but the revised saw retained the same 50V model designation.

John Deere 60V

The 60V was based on the Echo CS-602VL. Deere documented a production revision at serial number 16,001 without creating a new model name.

John Deere 70V

The 70V shared its basic architecture with the Echo CS-702VL and was the largest member of Deere’s advertised five-saw range.

John Deere 25EV

USDA cross-reference material connects the later 25EV to the Echo CS-290EVL. Deere retained the 25EV name across a major serial-number revision at 100,001.

John Deere 55V

The 55V used the Echo CS-500VL platform with breaker-point ignition. The electronic-ignition 55EV followed it.

John Deere 80EV

The 80EV was the Deere version of the Echo CS-750EVL. It is a different saw from the later 80.7 cc 800V.

John Deere 45EV

The Echo CS-500EVL-based 55EV was the electronic-ignition successor to the 55V.

John Deere 35EV

The 35EV was related to the Echo CS-330EVL. Deere manuals use 35EV, even though marketplace listings frequently reverse it to EV-35 or shorten it to 35.

John Deere 46EV

The standard 46EV was the Deere counterpart of the Echo CS-440EVL and generally used a fixed hand guard rather than the P version’s chain brake.

The JD 66SV is one of the most unusual Deere chainsaws. Its Echo CST-610EVL-derived engine used two opposed cylinders rather than the single cylinder found in nearly every other production chainsaw.

John Deere 66SVP

John Deere 670V

Homelite-Built Gasoline Chainsaws: c. 1995–2003

John Deere acquired Homelite in 1994 and subsequently sold several Deere-badged Homelite chainsaws.

Deere technical manual TM1750 covers the 200CS, 230CS, 300CS, and 550CS, while separate Deere and Homelite literature documents the 350CS and J3816.

John Deere 200CS

The 200CS was related to the Homelite 3850/20AV family. Deere sold documented 14- and 16-inch product-number packages, but those product numbers were not separate model names.

John Deere 230CS

The 230CS corresponds to the Homelite 4550/23AV family. OCR errors in some scanned government documents turn 230CS into 270CS, but Deere manuals confirm that 230CS is the correct model.

John Deere 300CS

The 300CS was the Deere version of the Homelite 300 platform. Several UT product numbers identify production or bar-package revisions, not additional Deere model names.

John Deere 350CS

The 350CS was a Deere-badged Homelite Super XL Automatic, an older but long-lived magnesium-chassis design.

John Deere 550CS

The 550CS was mechanically related to the Homelite 8800. Its 88 cc engine makes it the largest-displacement documented production chainsaw sold under the John Deere name.

John Deere J3816 and J3816R

  • Guide-bar range: 30–41 cm (12–16 in.); 41 cm (16 in.) was the documented Deere factory package

The J3816 used Homelite product number UT10945 and belonged to the Homelite Ranger/PowerStroke family. J3816R appears to have been a retail-package suffix rather than a different engine or chassis. Deere promoted its tool-free Quik-Tight chain adjustment.

Emak and Efco-Built Gasoline Chainsaws: c. 2000–2009

The final full John Deere chainsaw range was manufactured in Italy by Emak and closely related to Efco models. Oleo Mac is another brand owned by Emak.

Deere technical manual TM1917 covers the CS36, CS40, CS46, CS52, CS56, CS62, CS71, and CS81. Deere later added the low-emission CS36LE and CS40LE.

John Deere CS36

The CS71 was the Deere version of the Efco 171. Deere’s application guide listed bars through 32 inches, wider than the packages commonly encountered on surviving saws.

John Deere No. 7 Electric Chain Saw

The No. 7 is a genuine Deere-branded corded-electric chainsaw, documented by operator’s manual OM-GA10224 and parts catalog PC1353. Parts-catalog editions are known from the 1970s through February 1980. It should not be confused with Deere equipment carrying “7” as part of an unrelated product number.

For collectors and owners, the exact model code matters. It identifies the true manufacturer, compatible parts, correct manuals, and whether a familiar-looking Deere saw is actually part of an entirely different mechanical family.
