Every Dolmar Chainsaw Model: Production Years and Specifications

| | ,

Dolmar’s model history is unusually difficult to turn into one clean list. The company reused platforms, sold different model numbers in different countries, used the Sachs-Dolmar name for part of its history, and later shared designs with Makita. This list covers every documented production chainsaw model or model badge found under the Dolmar or Sachs-Dolmar name.

Common suffixes/designations include H for heated handles, D for a decompression valve, C for a catalytic version, TLC for tool-less chain adjustment, TH for top-handle, HS for high-speed or special-market equipment, and HappyStart for an assisted-start version. However, suffix meanings were not perfectly consistent across every period and market.

1927–1969: early petrol, two-man, and first one-man saws

Dolmar began in Hamburg in 1927 when Emil Lerp introduced the Type A chainsaw, named after the mountain where it was demonstrated. The company remained independent until:

  1. Fichtel & Sachs acquired a majority interest in 1975, beginning the “Sachs-Dolmar” era;
  2. Mannesmann then gained control through its 1987 purchase of Fichtel & Sachs.
  3. Makita acquired Sachs-Dolmar in January 1991, returned to the shorter Dolmar branding and sold many related saws under both Dolmar and Makita.

Makita eventually absorbed the company as Makita Engineering Germany, ended gas-equipment production in March 2022, and discontinued Dolmar distribution while concentrating on Makita-branded battery equipment.

Here are all the Dolmar and Sachs-Dolmar tagged chainsaw models that were produced across all of these periods.

  • Bar length: 33–45 cm (13–18 in)
  • Notes: H denotes heated handles. The long-lived family appears as 115 and 115i in different literature. Period owner paperwork and service references identify 115 Extra as the injection-start 115i form. RescueCut packages did not change the engine model.

Regional and export petrol badges

These names are genuine production or documented parts/manual badges, but surviving evidence is thinner than it is for the main German range. They are separated to avoid quietly assigning one market’s dates to another.

Sachs-Dolmar 40

  • Production years: Unknown
  • Displacement: 40 cc
  • Power: 1.7 kW / 3.7 SAE hp
  • Weight: About 4.8 kg (10.6 lb) with 30 cm bar and chain

  • Notes: French-market badge corresponding to the 105 platform.

Sachs-Dolmar 50

  • Production years: Unknown
  • Displacement: 51 cc
  • Power: 2.2 kW / 5 SAE hp
  • Weight: About 5.1 kg (11.2 lb) with 33 cm bar and chain
  • Bar length: 33–45 cm (13–18 in)
  • Notes: Regional badge corresponding to the 112 platform.

Sachs-Dolmar 51

  • Production years: About 1986–unknown
  • Displacement: 52 cc
  • Power: 2.4 kW
  • Weight: About 5.1 kg (11.2 lb), PHO
  • Bar length: 33–45 cm (13–18 in)
  • Notes: French-market badge corresponding to the 111 family.

Dolmar 106

  • Production years: Unknown
  • Displacement: 38 cc
  • Power: Unknown
  • Weight: About 4.25 kg (9.4 lb), PHO
  • Bar length: 40 cm (16 in) documented
  • Notes: Export badge on a Poulan S25-family saw. The parent Poulan platform dates from roughly 1974–1984, but that is not proof of the exact Dolmar-badge period.

Dolmar 110 EX and 110 Extra

  • Production years: Unknown
  • Displacement: 43 cc
  • Power: 2.3 kW
  • Weight: About 5 kg (11 lb) with 33 cm bar and chain
  • Bar length: 33–45 cm (13–18 in)
  • Notes: Export version of the 110. EX and Extra are alternate forms of the same export badge in surviving application literature.

Sachs-Dolmar 121 and Dolmar 121i

  • Production years: Unknown; documented in late-period US spark-arrester literature and surviving Japanese-market machines
  • Displacement: 68 cc
  • Power: Unknown
  • Weight: 5.8–6.5 kg (12.8–14.3 lb) reported; weighing basis unknown
  • Bar length: 60–63 cm (24–25 in) documented on Japanese-market examples; factory range unknown
  • Notes: A genuine but poorly documented regional badge related to the 68 cc 120-series family. US records use 121, while Japanese machines and service accounts use 121i. Because no factory specification sheet was found, the reported weight and bar figures should not be read as a complete factory range.

Dolmar 520

  • Production years: Unknown
  • Displacement: 52 cc
  • Power: Unknown
  • Weight: Unknown
  • Bar length: Unknown
  • Notes: Documented by regional parts material. It belongs to the 111/115-era 52 cc family, but model-specific output and weight could not be verified.

PS-series petrol chainsaws

Dolmar’s PS naming covered several unrelated chassis generations. The number is therefore a model name, not always a literal displacement figure.

QuickSet, TLC, heated-handle, catalyst, decompression, full-wrap, and RescueCut versions are listed with their parent saws when the engine specification is unchanged.

Dolmar PS-2 and PS-3

  • Production years: 2001–unknown

  • Power: 0.74 kW / 1.0 hp
  • Weight: 2.5 kg (5.5 lb), PHO

Reported or conflicting badges

The following names have enough evidence to mention but not enough to place confidently in the main production chronology. They should not be silently treated as established specifications.

Sachs-Dolmar 260, reported petrol version

  • Production years: About 1978 is reported; unverified
  • Displacement: Unknown
  • Power: 1.4 PS is reported
  • Weight: 2.7 kg (6.0 lb) is reported

Dolmar’s official archive independently proves that 260 was also used on the 1,050 W corded-electric model listed above. Until a period Dolmar catalog or manual is found, the petrol badge should be treated as provisional.

  • Displacement: Not applicable if the reported electric identification is correct
  • Power: Unknown
  • Weight: Unknown
  • Bar length: 30 cm (12 in) is reported

Source notes

The most useful source collections are:

Where two credible sources conflict, both figures or the conflict itself are stated. “Unknown” is intentionally used instead of reverse-engineering a displacement from a model number or treating a current aftermarket parts listing as proof of production dates.
