Jonsered is a Swedish brand with a long history in the chainsaw industry.
Originally founded in 1832 as a textile company by Scotsman William Gibson, Jonsered eventually shifted toward machinery and, in 1954, released its first chainsaw — the “Raket” (Rocket). This lightweight and powerful saw marked the company’s entry into the forestry sector and quickly gained popularity among professional loggers for its performance and ergonomic design.
Over the following decades, Jonsered became known for innovation, particularly in safety and anti-vibration systems, and earned a strong reputation in the professional logging world.
In 1979, Jonsered was acquired by Electrolux, which also owned Husqvarna and other chainsaw brands. Over time, Jonsered chainsaws began to share components and technology with Husqvarna models, although the brand retained its distinct red styling.
When Husqvarna became an independent company in 2006, it continued producing Jonsered-branded chainsaws for a time, but the brand was eventually phased out in the late 2010s.
Despite its discontinuation, Jonsered remains a beloved name among chainsaw enthusiasts and collectors, with many of its older models still prized for their reliability and craftsmanship.
Jonsered chainsaws are still highly regarded by collectors and professionals, especially older Swedish-made models like the Jonsered 621, 630, 670, 2095, and 2171.
The Raket remains an iconic piece of chainsaw history. “Raket” Means Rocket in Swedish.
Jonsered wasn’t just a chainsaw manufacturer — it had a full line of forestry equipment, including winches, logging tools, and even small tractors and forwarders.
They were one of the first to incorporate anti-vibration handles to reduce operator fatigue — a feature that became standard across the industry.
This is what they had on their old company history page:
In a country like Sweden, where 75% of the land area is covered by forest, it is only natural that the forestry industry is one of the most important sectors. The pursuit of technical innovation is another typical Swedish trait. It is therefore no coincidence that the world’s first lightweight one-man chainsaw was invented in Sweden back in 1954, specifically in Jonsered — a small mill town nestled in the forest landscape just a few miles northeast of Gothenburg.
At that time, the Nordic forests had for generations been inhabited by professional lumberjacks. They were tough men who lived and worked under simple conditions in a harsh climate. Making their lives a bit less difficult and dangerous became one of Jonsered’s primary goals.
Since then, the engineers at Jonsered have continued to lead the development of professional chainsaws, right up to today’s models, which are known for their innovative features: chain brake, vibration dampening, and turbo air cleaning, to name just a few. They also developed modern delimbing techniques and have taught this efficient and labor-saving method around the world.
For today’s professional and semi-professional chainsaw users, Jonsered saws are still considered effective and reliable partners in the forest. But our knowledge of lightweight, efficient engines, ergonomics, and environmental care has also formed the foundation for the feature-rich product range Jonsered now offers. A legacy and pioneering spirit that we continue to uphold today.
