Husqvarna 49 Chainsaw Specifications and Reviews

| | ,

The Husqvarna 49 is a mid-sized homeowner chainsaw model that was released in 1996 and only had a short production run.

About the versions, Saw Troll on ArboristSite.com said:

…there have been two 49s – the first one never went into series production as the 49, but resulted in the 50 Rancher – the second one was a late 1990s saw, that basically was the 40/45, with a 48.7cc engine on it.

Both are rare, but the first one is by far the rarest of them – I have only seen pictures of one of those, on a collectors site based in Sweden.

And User ‘Spike 60’ said:

The 49 was a Partner based design, that came out near the end of the model run of the 40/45 family. (That engine size had a longer run on the Jonsered side as the 2050 Turbo.)

This family of saws are super reliable. Easy starting, and relatively quiet running. Power is not that impressive compared to many saws of similar displacement, (An 026 will toast it) But if you’re just cutting and not racing, they won’t let you down.

Because the Husqvarna 49 had such a short production run, there are not many of them out there today. It’s even difficult to find pictures of the saw.

These pictures come from a 2025 listing on North West Firearms, where the saw was listed for $150 with this description:

Used Husky 49 chainsaw, reconditioned bar, good sharp chain. Runs, cuts, oils, and idles as it should. I used it some yesterday and it ran great. 16 inch bar, I have another bar and chain, 2 inches longer for an additional $25.

And again, on ArboristSite, user Axlerod74 said:

The 49 is a plastic case husky right under the 50cc mark. I owned one and liked it very well for general firewood cutting. Good air filter, nice clutch, very responsive throttle always started on 3rd or 4th pull, oils good.

Mine pulled a 16-18 inch bar with .325 chain pretty good. I esp. liked the 18″ narrow kerf set up on it. Mine was a ’98 model that cut a lot of firewood. Well taken care of, it can last a long time.

Even though it is a plastic case model, the seals hold up very well. I was never able to find aftermarket top ends so if you had to rebuild it, you would be looking at e-bay or OEM (expensive).

… Compared to the rancher; it is a little lighter, not quite as strong (my rancher pulls a 18″ .325 set up a little better in the big stuff) but it holds it’s own at 50cc. A Stihl 026 is also a bit stronger runner.
