Vintage Solo 626 Chainsaw Restoration Pictures

| | ,

The 70 cc Solo 626 (also marketed as Solo Model 70 or 70/626) is a German-made chainsaw introduced in the early 1960s.

It was built by Solo Kleinmotoren GmbH in Stuttgart, West Germany, and first appeared in catalogs in 1963. Designed as a smaller complement to the larger Solo “Rex” (125 cc) saw, the Solo 626 was pitched as a budget-friendly, robust farm saw – a “little sister of the Rex” that “worked well and cost little” (according to Chainsaw Mania).

The saw pictured here was listed and sold (US$590.00) on eBay by Alex (seller szabsa76). Check out his other listings for more great saws.

The listing description:

Vintage Solo 626 chainsaw (60126) completely restored for sale

A rare Solo 626 chainsaw is for sale in good technical condition, meticulously restored, original colors, with impeccable operation.

I replaced the crankshaft seals and carburetor seals, fuel pipe, fuel filter.

It starts easily, the chain oiling is automatic, with a 21-inch sword with a 0.404 chain.

I don’t recommend the saw for cutting wood, but rather for collectors.

I undertake international shipping, even to the USA!

I will be happy to answer any questions.

Solo, founded 1948 in Stuttgart, was known for agricultural and forestry machinery.

The Solo 626 (often branded as “Solo Model 70” in export catalogs) was produced in the early 1960s as a mid-sized saw. It was intended as a second saw for small farm use, complementing the larger Solo Rex (125 cc). Contemporary Solo brochures explicitly marketed it to farmers as “ideal for agricultural forestry.”

Early versions (circa 1963) had a one-piece chaincase with an integrated oil tank (similar to designs on early STIHL models). Later in production, the oil tank was split off and bolted separately to the back of the engine block.

The saw’s distinctive yellow-and-blue color scheme (pale yellow paint with blue plastic cover) was typical of Solo products of that era. The Solo 630 is another good example.

Serial number prefixes for the 626 started at “60126” (hence the model reference), and production ran roughly from 1963 through about 1965–1966.

After 1966, the 626 was discontinued, but it remains remembered as a classic “old-timer” saw, often called Solo 70/626 in collector registries.
