McCulloch D36 Chainsaw Reviews, Specifications, Vintage Ads

The McCulloch D36, produced in the late 1950s, was a more powerful companion to the D30 and designed for heavier cutting work while maintaining similar portability. Delivering about 4.5 horsepower at roughly 17 pounds, it offered increased cutting performance without sacrificing ease of handling.

Like the D30, the D36 featured McCulloch’s LUBRI-MAC automatic chain oiling system, a diaphragm “atomization” carburetor, and durable die-cast aluminum and magnesium construction, making it a strong and reliable chainsaw for farm, land clearing, and general woodcutting tasks.

Mac D36 reviews

Comments on the D-30 from the above FB post:

  • Rick said, “Great saws but man talk about needing ear protection, those things were brutal.”
  • Rolly said, “It was like a outboard motor sporting air cool and a chain.”
  • Lydia said, “You need 3 men to pull start it so you can catch your breath and then it flooded out had to dry the spark plug.”
  • Ken said, “Boat anchors.”
  • Jeff said, “The one we used in the 70’s was loud, heavy, and hard to start.”
  • Pete said, “Worked on loads of em, sh*t to work on and sh*t to use.”

And in another post on the D30, Alain said:

The D30 was the first of this series…

No oil tank, it uses the surplus oil from engine base to lubricate chain using an injector… did not work good… recall was made adding an extension tank in front of motor… the plastic recoil was also a problem scavenging the nylon gear… not sturdy enough, the model was abandoned and replaced by the D36.
