Mono SL-246 Chainsaw Specs, Features, Price, Pictures

| | ,

The Mono SL-246 was a late-1960s American chainsaw built by Mono Manufacturing Co. of Springfield, Missouri. It was introduced in 1968, with a 4.9 cu. in. (about 80 cc) single-cylinder engine.

Within Mono’s lineup, the SL-246 reads as the larger, later companion to the earlier SL-245, which had appeared in 1966 with a smaller 4.3 cu. in. (70 cc) engine. The SL-246 was not a radical redesign so much as a heavier-hitting version of the same basic idea: a one-man work saw built for straightforward cutting, medium-length bars, and practical field use rather than comfort or styling.

Mono SL-246 for sale

The saw pictured throughout this article is listed on eBay with seller ‘paveman56’ in April 2026, who regularly has interesting chainsaws for sale.

This saw is a great example of the Mono SL-246, even though it has been well-used and requires some TLC. It’s offered for sale for “parts or repair”.

The full eBay description:

Vintage Mono 6HP SL246 Chainsaw w 15″ Hardnose Bar For Parts or Repair 80cc

Mono Line SL246, a 4.9 ci. , 80cc saw made in the late 1960’s. Sticker says it made 6 HP.

Has spark, compression feels very good, and it sounds good turning over. What I can see of the piston/cyl through the exhaust looks good. Rear handle has a pop-riveted repair underneath, but it is solid. Recoil works as it should. Aluminum heat shield around the rear of the cylinder is broken in two places but still usable.

I couldn’t get the manual oiler to work- I dumped some dirty old oil out, you may get by with just a flush. Oiler button is missing from the lever. Both tanks need flushed but no rust is seen. Watch for rags in these tanks when you get the saw, I do this to prevent leakage of that last little bit.

If there was a throttle lock, it is missing. Bar measures about 15.5″ from the front, has good hardened tip left. Dried out Zip-Penn chain has a couple stiff links but is usable.

Selling As Is for parts or repair, no refunds or returns. I believe I’ve found everything wrong but I can’t guarantee it.

Please enlarge all photos for a close look, ask any questions.

It’s listed for sale for US $100.00.
